🚫 A unique parking garage but not for cars
Amsterdam has introduced a unique parking garage exclusively for bicycles, with a capacity of up to 7,000 bikes.
The $65 million underwater structure, located at Centraal Station, officially opened in late January 2023.
The largest bike parking garage in the Netherlands, capable of holding 12,000 bikes, is situated in Utrecht.
Initiatives like these aim to reduce car usage and promote seamless connections between rail transit and cycling infrastructure.
Apart from numerous health benefits, cycling can help alleviate traffic congestion and create quieter and more peaceful neighborhoods.
It’s also planet-friendly, contributing to reduced air pollution and the avoidance of harmful chemicals used by cars.

✨ Startup of the week: Carbon Smart Wood
Confronting carbon consequences…Loss of trees occurs not only through deforestation but also due to other reasons. Many trees fall due to old age, disease, and natural disasters, and are either burned or end up in landfills and mulch piles. These actions release more CO2 into the atmosphere. This startup has found a way to tackle this problem.
Timber transformation…Carbon Smart Wood™ repurposes the salvaged trees into wood products.
🪵 It is building local supply chains, with a network of verified salvagers, which helps create local jobs.
🪵 It procures salvaged trees from them and converts them into usable lumber.
🪵 It works with furniture companies, architects & designers, and anyone who uses wood.
Supplying & tracking…15% of the company's profits are allocated to planting new trees in urban areas. Hardwood that has naturally fallen emits 26% less CO₂ compared to traditionally harvested material. Having local supply chains helps to further reduce emissions. Carbon Smart Wood™ also uses a lumber tracking app called Traece, which enhances transparency in the supply chain.
