🚋 Antwerp's rolling garden initiative
Towards the start of this month, the city council in Antwerp, Belgium, converted an entire tram into a lush mobile garden.
They did that by stuffing plants in every possible place in the tram- between the seats, on the panels separating the windows, and even on the roof.
The initiative called The Neighbourhood in Bloom, aims to encourage residents to take up urban gardening and transform their city into a greener and healthier place to live.
As part of the initiative, the council is offering free "facade gardens" to those living in the central district of the city.
The same scheme in 2022 saw residents create over 200 facade gardens, 170 areas of trees, and 100 garlands.
Plants and trees help lower temperatures in cities and mitigate the "urban heat island" effect while decreasing pollution and making the air cleaner.
Urban gardening also improves mental well-being.
💳 A debit card for eco-conscious consumers
The Fuel for Fossil Fuels…When we deposit our money in banks, they invest it into various projects and pay us interest. A lot of times, these projects are fossil fuel projects. Ones that are polluting the planet. So indirectly, our money is fueling fossil fuel projects and negatively impacting the environment.
Banking on the Planet's Future…French startup Green-Got is providing an opportunity to change that. It guarantees that our savings and the money that is sitting in our bank account aren’t going to finance fossil fuel projects and other polluting industries.
Its debit card works like any other debit card and is accepted wherever Mastercard is accepted.
It generates revenue through a monthly subscription fee of €6.
It also showcases the carbon dioxide equivalent of your purchases so that you can get a sense of your personal impact on the environment.
A Debit Card for a Sustainable Future…Anyone in France can open an account through their app and in a few days, they will receive a card made of natural wood or recycled plastic. After a recent funding round, they are planning to expand to other European countries.
💩 Diapers that are gentle on both babies and the planet
Diapering Dilemma…A typical baby uses about 6,000 diapers in the first two years of their life. These diapers are typically made of plastic and are packaged in plastic, resulting in a significant amount of plastic waste. Most of this waste ends up in landfills, where it can take centuries to decompose.
Dyper's Diapers…US-based startup Dyper has been working since 2018 to solve this problem. It wants to replace these plastic-based diapers with plant-based ones which are good for the bum, and the planet.
Its diapers are majorly constructed from plant-based materials.
They are free of chemicals like chlorine, alcohol, lotions, and Phthalates.
They're unprinted, unscented, and soft to the touch.
Out of a Messy Situation…Dyper runs a Redyper program to get back the soiled diapers from customers. Customers can return their soiled diapers, training pants & wipes. Dyper sorts them out and commercially composts them, keeping them out of landfills.
