😺 I’ve Got Some Exciting News
My sustainability journey started with a podcast series in 2020.
I was trying to understand the impact space and thought the best way to learn about it would be to talk to people building something in it.
So I started reaching out to founders who were solving climate change problems.
But since most of my requests got politely declined, I had to revisit my strategy.
So I started a podcast series. I asked the founders to give me 15-20 minutes of their time in return for free PR and marketing (I used to record, edit, and publish those videos).
50 founders agreed to do that.
And that’s how I learned about this space.
I learned about the problems plaguing the planet through the lens of the solutions that are being built. I felt that was a less overwhelming way to do so.
So I started recreating the same experience for others. I started sharing climate solutions in my newsletter and on LinkedIn to make more people aware of the problems.
And now I am taking it a step further.
By launching email-based courses.
The strategy for these courses is the same. We will talk in-depth about the problems plaguing the planet but through the lens of the solutions.
I am planning to name it 5-5-5 course (open to other name suggestions; please drop them in the comments below).
In 5 days, through 5 emails, we will talk about 5 startups solving a particular problem. (Each email would be a 2-4 min read)
For example, 5 startups that are tackling different aspects of plastic waste. Or 5 startups that are promoting a circular economy.
At the end of the course, you would be equipped to have a deeper conversation with anyone about that topic.
And play your part in making more people aware of the issues.
We need these conversations to happen.
Because if we don’t talk about them, we won’t take any action.
I am looking for a few people to sign up for the first course (it’s free) and provide me with some feedback.
You can sign up below or reply to this email with “Yes, I am interested!”.
⌛ Time for the quiz of the week
Renewable energy growth is at an all-time high. According to a report, <X>% of the world’s energy now comes from renewables.
Answer at the end of the newsletter. No one (including me) can see your response so feel free to vote 😉
✨ A sustainable alternative to packaging foam: Cruz Foam
This brand is creating a sustainable alternative to packaging foam. It is made from upcycled food waste.
Foam Folly…e-commerce has revolutionized the shopping experience. In a few clicks, we can get anything delivered to us, wrapped in styrofoam & plastic. But this has a downside for the planet. The packaging material ends up in landfills and releases greenhouse gases. Also, these materials are petroleum-based, further adding to the climate crisis.
Foamidable Shell-ter…Cruz Foam is tackling this crisis with its bio-based alternative packaging. It creates a styrofoam alternative from chitin, a material found in the shells of shrimp and crabs. Chitin is not only tough and versatile, but it also decomposes quickly and safely. The seafood industry produces it in large quantities and it mostly ends up in landfills.
Chitin Champions…By leveraging Chitin, Cruz Foam is preventing it from ending up in landfills, where it would otherwise decompose and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. In addition to its foam alternatives, Cruz Foam also produces mailers and wraps that serve as substitutes for conventional bubble wrap, further contributing to waste reduction and the mitigation of climate change.
✅ 5 Brands That Are Tackling The Plastic Crisis
FabBRICK: Converting textile waste into bricks.
Infinity Box: Replacing single-use food containers with reusable ones.
Matter: Preventing microplastic pollution caused by the clothing industry.
River Cleaning: Intercepting plastic waste in rivers via a series of floating devices.
Shellworks: Sustainable packaging made from a vegan and compostable material.
😹 News That Lifted My Spirits This Week
Brick Bonuses…The LEGO Group is boosting its climate action by linking all salaried employees' bonuses to the company's emission reduction goals, starting this year.
Gas Lawsuit…Eight Alaskan youths have sparked a legal battle against a major gas project, asserting their climate rights.
Total Case…A criminal case has been filed against the CEO and directors of the French oil company TotalEnergies, alleging its fossil fuel exploitation has contributed to the deaths of victims of climate-fuelled extreme weather disasters.
