💚 This Founder Is Building a Green Burial Option
Katrina Spade’s parents were in medicine so talking about death wasn’t an uncommon dinner table discussion. But she never thought that she would end up building something in the death care space.
She’s the founder of Recompose, a green burial brand that allows you to convert your loved one’s body into soil that can nurture new life 💚
Katrina started thinking about it when she and her partner had their second kid. She realized that like everyone else, one day would be her last day on the planet.
And started asking questions like “what would I want for my body after I die?” “Should it go to a cemetery?” Or should I choose to be cremated?”
Around the same time, she also started a grad school in architecture.
So she decided to find answers to these questions through her thesis A Place for the Urban Dead.
And at the end of this, Recompose was born.
It transforms bodies into soil via human composting. This provides a way for our bodies to return to the earth.
⚰️ It has developed a patent-pending Recompose Vessel System where bodies are kept.
⚰️ Each vessel is filled with natural materials, such as wood chips, alfalfa, and straw, and is aerated. It is constantly monitored.
⚰️ After 5-7 weeks, the soil is collected and given to the families or donated to conservation efforts.

Recompose also handles all legal and logistical needs. It’s a funeral offering that is connected to the earth's natural cycles.
This is a sustainable alternative since cemeteries are running out of plots as land is being allocated to other developments and that leaves us with cremation which is a carbon-intensive activity.

✨ Startup of the week: GOB
This startup is making plastic-free, compostable earplugs that’s better for your 👂🏽 and the planet.
Ear-th friendly…Let's talk about earplugs—those tiny devices that help us block out noise. Surprisingly, the world manufactures 40 billion of them every year! That's enough to circle the planet 100 times. These earplugs are typically made from petroleum-based materials and discarded after a single use, making them harmful to the environment.
GOB™️ is tackling this problem. Through its plastic-free, compostable plugs.
They are made from lab-grown mycelium, a root like structure of fungus.
They take the shape of your ears and are comfortable for long, extended periods of time.
Once disposed, these plugs and their packaging completely regenerate back into soil in less than a month.
This allows you to tune out the noise without harming the planet. Now that's music to our ears!

😹 News That Lifted My Spirits This Week
🍔 Nugget of Change…McDonald's France is introducing vegan nuggets made from Beyond Meat, marking its first plant-based option in its largest market outside the US. The Veggie McPlant Nuggets will be a permanent menu addition, available at the same price as conventional chicken nuggets, aiming to attract both vegans and flexitarians looking to diversify their protein intake.
🚫Pedal Power Payoff…London's ultra-low emissions zone sparked a significant shift in children's transportation habits, with 40% switching from car rides to walking or biking to school within a year of implementation. This change not only reduces emissions but also has potential health benefits, combating childhood obesity and improving both mental and physical well-being.
🌊Wetland Wonders…Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo, is witnessing a remarkable transformation of its once-polluted wetlands into vital flood buffers through collaborative community and government efforts. These restored ecosystems not only help manage floods but also improve biodiversity, showcasing the power of environmental restoration and awareness initiatives.
