🏊♀️ Swimming for a cause
I swam down Ghana’s Volta River for 40 days to show the true cost of cheap clothes
Yvette Yaa Konadu Tetteh swam an impressive 450km along Ghana's Volta River for 40 days as part of the Agbetsi Living Water Expedition.
Through this expedition, she wanted to show the impact of the overconsumption of clothing in the global north on the waterways of countries like Ghana.
About 15m garments a week are imported into Ghana’s capital, Accra’s Kantamanto market from the global north.
~ 40% of these clothing items in the market end up as waste, which pollutes the land and waterways.
This waste spills into informal landfills and pollutes our water, leaving the land and the people to carry the burden of the global north’s rubbish – products of overproduction and overconsumption.
Shows how interconnected the world is and how far-reaching our actions can be!
🥂 Saving the planet one pour at a time
Spiriting away waste…Traditionally, spirits are manufactured in production facilities, transferred into glass bottles, and packed in cardboard boxes. These products are then transported to various locations, including wholesalers, restaurants, bars, and hotels. However, once the glass bottles are used, they are usually discarded and the cardboard boxes are dumped. While some of these materials may eventually make their way to a recycling facility, the likelihood and percentage of that happening is low.
Sustainably poured…A Singapore-based circular economy technology company ecoSPIRITS wants to change this distribution model and reduce waste. It’s building an alternate system that is low-carbon and low-waste. It produces Ecotote, which appears as a box, is machine washable with a screw top, and features a QR code for tracking.
Bars, restaurants, and consumers can pour the spirits from these as required.
These can then be sent back for sanitization and reuse.
This brings down the cardboard and glass waste.
Spirit of sustainability…The compact and sturdy packaging helps to reduce shipping costs and transportation emissions, ultimately lowering overall greenhouse gas emissions. It is encouraging to see some of the big brands partnering with ecoSPIRITS.

Paper perils…Many of us use single-use paper products, such as tissues and kitchen rolls. These products are made of wood, which means that to produce them, trees are cut down, leading to immense deforestation. While we can certainly plant more trees, it takes years for them to regrow.
Bamboozled by paper…Reel is rethinking these paper products. Instead of wood from trees, it’s using fast-growing and sustainable bamboo. Bamboo requires less water to grow as compared to trees and does not release CO2 when cut down. It also does not cause erosion when removed from the soil.
It makes paper towels, toilet paper, and tissues.
The products are free of virgin wood pulp or plastic packaging.
They are biodegradable.
Reel-y sustainable paper…The brand uses paper packaging made from post-consumer paper products. They do not use any artificial dyes or inks. Additionally, their freight shipping practices result in a net-zero amount of carbon dioxide emissions.
